Split Rock Lighthouse, located on the North Shore of Lake Superior, was built in 1905 after 29 ships were lost in one night on Lake Superior. The U.S. Coast Guard retired the lighthouse in 1969. But every November 10, the beacon of Split Rock shines its light in memory of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald which sank on November 11, 1975.

I keep asking myself, what was the artist thinking about when he created this exquisite sculpture of a jester in repose.

A talented photographer, who is also a close friend, allowed me to work from a photo she captured on St. Helena Island.  This island is one of the barrier islands that trace our southeast coast. The West African tradition of coiled basket making came to South Carolina in the 1700s. Over time the functional designs of the early baskets have evolved into intricate works of art.

Tidal marshes, small tributaries that feed into the ocean, delineate the coast of South Carolina. Because of the tides, the season and the interplay of light and clouds, their appearance is ever-changing. 

Luang Prabang, the former capitol of Laos, was once a regional center of Buddhism. The temples in this UNESCO World Heritage site are among the most sophisticated in Southeast Asia. At dawn you can hear the chanting of Buddhist nuns drifting from monasteries, followed by the chanting of Buddhist monks.
