San Miguel de Allende, a colonial-era city, is renowned for its baroque/neoclassical architecture. It was the first municipality to declare its independence from Spanish rule during the Mexican War of Independence. In the early twentieth century foreign artists and writers discovered its beauty and made it a cultural enclave. The town is noted for its narrow cobblestone streets and beautiful private courtyards.
