I decided to post an unfinished painting to show the birth process of a piece. I never know quite how long it will take to finish a painting. My photographer friend Jane Lurie has allowed me to work from her photo, A Rainy Day in Chinatown. You can see this beautiful photo of San Francisco on her blog: janeluriephotography.wordpress.com.
Love the colors in this piece, Jane.

Oh, Jane, your interpretation is superb and I am honored that my image inspired you. It has been exciting to see the evolving stages of this piece- your colors and shading and of course, the star subject with her orange umbrella. Thank you so much.

Jane, Just wonderful… Fascinating to see a somewhat early stage. Before I read your explanation I thought the subject matter could have been SF, from a Jane photograph. You two Janes have a special ability to capture time, place, spirit. Love the architecture, but especially love the elderly soul with cane and umbrella. I look forward to seeing the finished piece. K

OH JANE!! I LOVE this!!! You could stop now and it would be masterful. I LOVE your values as they recede into the background and grey-out. I love the focal point and the rendering you did in the foreground. . . What a “mood!” What a beauty!!!
If you continue, walk softly. There isn’t much else you need to say that this is already whispering so profoundly!! Miss you!!

STOP. this is great just the way it is! Or at least make a giclee of this stage.
I have never loved Renoir, a little too frothy and blurry for me, but then I saw some of his ‘unfinished’ paintings and thought they were wonderful.
